Online- RYA Safe & Fun Safeguarding Course

This new course is suitable for anyone working with children and vulnerable adults in an RYA environment. This includes those volunteering or working at recognised training centres and affiliated clubs

It provides a basic level of knowledge and awareness, put in the context of realistic scenarios that anyone could encounter at their club or centre.

From April 2015 onwards it will be a requirement for all newly qualifying Level 2 Racing Coaches, Dinghy and Windsurfing Instructors and Senior Instructors to complete prior to their instructor/coach training course.

This course is fully online and SPRmarine can provide it to whereever you are based.

Frequently asked questions

Who is required to take this course?

Newly qualifying Level 2 Racing Coaches, Dinghy and Windsurfing Instructors and Senior Instructors must take this course if their instructor course takes place after 1 April 2015.

Can anyone who isn't an instructor take this course?

Yes, anyone can take this course. It is useful for anyone involved in teaching or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults in an RYA environment such as a club or training centre.

Is it possible to take this course in a classroom instead of online?

No, this course is only available online. If you take it as part of your instructor training you will also complete a classroom workshop during the instructor course, but the course itself must be completed online.

How do I sign up for the course?

Click on link below, pay via PayPal  and we will send you login details - within 24 hrs.

What devices are compatible with the course?

You can take the course on a PC, Mac or iPad, so long as you are connected to the internet.

How long is the course?

This course is equivalent to classroom training of approximately three hours. However, the benefit of learning online is that you can work through it at your own speed. It may take you more or less time than that.

How long is the certificate valid for?

The certificate doesn't have a specific expiry date. However, your training centre, club or organisation should have a policy for ongoing staff training and ensuring that everyone is up to date. That may involve you taking the course again at regular intervals, or completing other relevant safeguarding training. Please check your own organisation's policy for details.

How much will the course cost?

RYA  has asked us to keep this as low as possible -  we have set the price as £10 as an introductory offer.  If we  keep this going as long as we can or until we feel the need to increase to cover our time.

I've already taken a different safeguarding course elsewhere. Can this be used instead of Safe and Fun for my instructor course?

The Safe and Fun course forms the basis of the safeguarding workshop that you will complete during your instructor course and puts safeguarding issues into context specifically for those instructing at RYA centres or clubs. It is therefore not possible to use other courses as alternative certification prior to your Instructor, Senior Instructor or Level 2 Racing Coach Course.

RYA SRC VHF Radio Courses - Jan 2014 Updates

With the new changes being introduced we are pleased to announce that you have a choice of a Classroom course or the NEW RYA SRC VHF Radio Online Interactive course.

SPR even have a hybrid course which is designed for people who may find that having enrolled in the online course, for various reasons want to change to the classroom course. This changeover involves an additional fee.

The classroom courses are now changed, and in order to adhere to the minimum hours of study, involve structured pre attendance coursework (should be completed in approx. 3-4 hrs.) - this will allow concentration on the practical work and refreshment of the completed course work rather than teaching it from scratch.

In addition to this we will now restrict each classroom course to 4 students only and each student will have sole use of a Training Radio to practice

NOTE: Whatever option is selected will involve cheque or credit/debit card payment directly to the RYA before exam.

NEW EXAMINATION FORMAT

This will take the form:  30 minutes Written Exam, then 15 minutes familiarity of radios, followed by Practical Assessment – covering Routine, Mayday, Pan Pan, Security calls including using DSC Alerts (30 Minutes per person).    No more than 4 students being examined at any one time.

After completing the course you have two options:

1)      Be examined on the same day, 1700 hrs. to approx. 1930 hrs.,  this will be in a group no greater than 4, by an examiner other than your instructor.

2)      Arrange another day with us to be examined, by an examiner other than your instructor.

After successfully passing the online course exam, you arrange a time with us and we will examine you, this process will take approx.  1 ½ hrs. to 2 ½  hrs. depending on numbers sitting the exam (4 maximum).

(Please note the examiner cannot instruct you, if you feel you need more tuition, consider upgrading to the hybrid classroom option)

Green Rescue Laser Flare® Receives Ocean Navigator’s 2013

Greatland Laser’s Green Rescue Laser Flare® Receives Ocean Navigator’s 2013 Chuck Husick Marine Technology Award

Willow, Alaska – November 5, 2013:  Greatland Laser has received Ocean Navigator magazine’s 2013 Chuck Husick Marine Technology Award for its Green Rescue Laser Flare® signaling device.  The annual award recognizes great technology products used in the marine environment.

The Rescue Laser concept, simply put, is to send a conventional laser beam through a special optic to create a line of light. Point the cigar size Rescue Laser Flare® at a wall and you see a line a foot or so long. Point and slowly sweep it toward a passing ship, airplane or other rescue vessel ten miles away and the line is 3,600 ft high. The line cannot miss anything in its path—any portion of the line viewed by rescuers appears as a brilliant flash distinctly different from other background light.

The Rescue Laser Flare® can also be used as a tool to detect reflective material on life jackets, channel markers, etc. up to a mile away. When any portion of the laser line is scanned over reflective material it produces a bright flash of light.

Unlike conventional pyrotechnic flares, Rescue Laser Flares® last for hours on replaceable batteries, are safe for the environment, and there is no fire hazard.

US federal law HR658, Section 311 specifically exempts "an individual using a laser emergency signaling devices to send an emergency distress signal" from the prohibition on shining a laser at an aircraft.  Greatland Laser has sold its patented laser emergency signaling devices throughout the world for over 11 years.  We have never had a safety issue with the products.

Class III A laser < 5mW.  Available in green or red laser.
